We build driveways in Bonnyrigg, Lasswade and Poltonhall – monoblock and paved drives dug out, built on a compacted sub-base and finished with proper drainage.
Bonnyrigg's driveway jobs come in three kinds. Older homes in Poltonhall and around the town centre often have no off-street parking. Newer homes in Hopefield have a drive that's a car too short. And in Lasswade, drives are often steep, which brings its own problems with water and grip.

Driveways in Bonnyrigg: how we work
New driveways for homes without parking
In Poltonhall and similar streets, front gardens are often deep enough for a car. We remove the lawn and any old wall, dig out to full depth, build a compacted sub-base, set edging in concrete and lay monoblock. A dropped kerb must be approved by Midlothian Council before cars cross the pavement.
Extending new-build drives
In Hopefield and the newer estates, we widen single drives into doubles, matching the depth and build of the existing drive and blending or relaying the surface.
Sloping drives in Lasswade
A steep drive needs a few extra things. Water runs down it, so we fit a channel drain across the bottom, especially in front of a garage or house door. Herringbone monoblock gives the best grip and resists creeping downhill, and the edging needs to be especially solid. On very steep drives, a textured block helps in frost.
02
Drainage and permission
New front-garden hard surfaces in Scotland need to be permeable or drain into the garden rather than the road to avoid needing planning permission. We plan for that with falls into lawns or borders, soakaways or permeable paving. In Lasswade's conservation area, removing a front wall to create a drive may need permission.

05
What affects the cost of a driveway in Bonnyrigg
New or extended
Creating a new drive in a Poltonhall front garden involves more digging than extending a Hopefield drive.
Slope
Steep Lasswade drives need stronger edging, channel drains and possibly intermediate restraints.
Front walls
Removing or rebuilding part of a front wall for access.
Drainage
Soakaways or permeable paving to meet front-garden rules.
Material and pattern
Herringbone with a border costs a little more than plain stretcher bond.
Dropped kerb
Council approval and fees are separate.
Bonnyrigg driveway FAQs
My drive is steep and water runs into the garage. What can be done?
A channel drain across the bottom of the drive, connected to a soakaway or drain, takes the water away before it reaches the door.
Can you add a parking space without losing all the lawn?
Often, yes. A single parking bay with a planted border keeps some green and helps with drainage.
How long does a driveway take?
Usually one to two weeks.
