Our monoblock driveways in Edinburgh are dug out, built up on a compacted sub-base and laid with neat edging and drainage – block paving that stays level for years.
Monoblock is what most people in Scotland call block paving: small concrete blocks laid tight together on a sand bed, locked in place by the edging and the sand brushed into the joints. It's popular because it's strong, it can be laid in patterns and colours, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if a drain or cable underneath ever needs attention.

Monoblock driveways in Edinburgh, from dig-out to final sweep
- 1
Mark out and dig out
We agree the shape and levels with you, then excavate the old surface and soft ground, usually to a depth of a couple of hundred millimetres or more depending on the ground.
- 2
Membrane where needed
On clay or soft ground, a geotextile membrane keeps the sub-base separate from the soil.
- 3
Sub-base
Crushed stone laid and compacted in layers. This is what carries the weight of the car.
- 4
Edge restraints
Kerbs or edging blocks set on and backed with concrete. Without them, monoblock slowly spreads and the joints open up.
- 5
Sand bed
A screeded bed of sharp sand, levelled to the right falls.
- 6
Laying
Blocks laid in your chosen pattern, with cuts made neatly at edges, kerbs and manhole covers.
- 7
Compaction and jointing
The whole surface is compacted, then kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and compacted again until they're full.
- 8
Final sweep
Excess sand cleared and the site left tidy.
02
Why monoblock driveways fail, and how we avoid it

| Problem | Usual cause | How we prevent it |
|---|---|---|
| Ruts where the wheels sit | Thin or poorly compacted sub-base | Proper depth, compacted in layers |
| Blocks spreading at the edges | No or weak edge restraint | Edging set and backed in concrete |
| Puddles | Wrong falls or no drainage | Falls set before laying, channel drains where needed |
| Weeds in joints | Joints not fully filled | Kiln-dried sand compacted into full joints |
| Sunken patches over trenches | Old service trenches not compacted | Soft spots dug out and rebuilt |
03
Patterns and colours
Herringbone
Blocks laid at 45 or 90 degrees in a zigzag. The strongest pattern for driveways because the blocks interlock against turning wheels.
Basket weave
Pairs of blocks laid at right angles. A traditional look, better suited to paths and lighter use.
Stretcher bond
Rows of blocks like brickwork. Clean and simple, often used for borders.
Borders and bands
A contrasting colour around the edge, or a band across the drive, frames the space.
Colours
Charcoal, brindle, buff and red, with tumbled or smooth finishes.

04
Permeable monoblock
Permeable block paving has wider joints filled with fine grit and a deeper, open-graded sub-base that lets rainwater soak through and drain away slowly. It's one of the simplest ways to meet the Scottish rules on new hard surfaces in front gardens, which need to be permeable or drain into the garden rather than onto the road.

Monoblock across Edinburgh and the Lothians
Monoblock is the default driveway on newer estates across the Lothians, and many from the 1990s and 2000s are now due for relaying or replacement. We lay monoblock drives across Edinburgh and throughout Livingston, Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg, Penicuik and Musselburgh.
Monoblock FAQs
Can you relay my existing monoblock?
Often, yes. If the blocks are sound, we can lift them, rebuild the base in sunken areas and relay them, which costs less than new blocks. Faded blocks can be mixed with new or used for borders.
How do I keep weeds out of monoblock?
Keep the joints full. After a few years, sweeping in fresh kiln-dried sand helps, and a stiff brush or pressure wash (not straight into the joints) keeps moss down.
Will monoblock stain from oil?
Concrete blocks can stain. Wiping up spills quickly helps, and darker colours and tumbled finishes hide marks better.
What's the difference between monoblock and block paving?
None. Monoblock is the Scottish name for block paving.
