What we do in Loanhead

Patios

Porcelain and sandstone patios on a properly dug-out, compacted base, laid to fall away from the house. A lot of back gardens around Loanhead are sloping towards the Pentlands side, so we often combine a patio with a step or low retaining wall to give a flat area that works.

Patios

Driveways

Monoblock and paved drives for homes that want off-street parking or a tidier frontage, with drainage kept within the garden to meet front-garden rules.

Driveways

Garden fencing

Closeboard and panel fencing on concrete-set posts. Gardens on the higher, open side of town catch the wind, so we choose posts and styles to suit.

Fencing

Garden walls and repairs

New front and boundary walls, plus repairs to old stone and brick walls that have started to lean or lose mortar.

Slap throughs

Kitchens opened into dining rooms and new doorways in Loanhead homes, with the right lintel or steel and the paperwork in order.

Gardens in and around Loanhead

Loanhead sits on rising ground between the city bypass and the Pentland Hills, and that shapes a lot of the work we do here.

Many gardens slope, some quite steeply, so terracing, steps and retaining walls come up often. The ground can be heavy and slow to drain after rain, which is why we're careful with sub-base depth and falls on every patio and drive.

The housing is a mix. Around the older part of town there are stone-built cottages and terraces with boundary walls that are often a century old and starting to lean or lose their pointing. Post-war and former council homes tend to have long, narrow back gardens that suit a patio by the house, a path down the middle and fencing on both sides. Newer homes on the edges of town often come with a bare, compacted plot and a thin layer of topsoil, which needs proper preparation before turf or paving goes down.

Straiton and Bilston have their own character too: Bilston's cottages and newer infill, and the homes around Straiton close to the retail park and the A701. Wherever you are, we'll look at the ground, levels and drainage before suggesting anything.

What affects the cost of a job in Loanhead

Being local doesn't change how we price, but it does help: no travel time, quick site visits and easy return trips mean more of your budget goes into the work. The main factors are the same as anywhere: size, materials, how much ground needs digging out and how easy the access is. Sloping gardens on the Pentlands side of town often need steps or a low retaining wall, which adds to a patio job, and older stone walls usually cost more to repair carefully than to replace with something plain. We'll always explain the options.

Loanhead FAQs

How quickly can you come out to quote in Loanhead?

Usually within a few days, often sooner, because we're based here.

Do you do small jobs?

Yes. Small walls, a few metres of fencing, a sunken section of patio or a gate are all worth a call. Local small jobs are easy for us to fit in.

My house is in a conservation area. Can you still help?

Yes. Lasswade and Roslin both have conservation areas, and work to walls, fences and frontages there may need permission. We'll tell you at the visit if we think you need to check with Midlothian Council.

Can you match old stone walls around Loanhead?

We can repair and rebuild brick walls and match materials as closely as possible.
