We supply and fit garden fencing in Edinburgh and the Lothians – panel, closeboard and slatted fencing plus gates – set on solid posts so it stands up to Scottish weather.

Most of the fence repairs we're called to after a winter storm come down to the same few faults: posts not deep enough, posts set in soil instead of concrete, and panels that act like sails in the wind. A good fence is about the posts first and the panels second.

Garden fencing in Edinburgh, supplied and fitted

Panel fencing

Ready-made panels between timber or concrete posts. Quick to fit and good value, with a choice of styles. Best in sheltered gardens.

Closeboard fencing

Vertical feather-edge boards nailed to horizontal rails between posts. Stronger than panels, built in place to follow slopes, and easy to repair a board at a time. Our usual recommendation for exposed gardens.

Slatted and contemporary fencing

Horizontal slats with small gaps for a modern look. The gaps let wind through, which reduces the load on the posts, and they let some light into small gardens.

Picket and low fencing

Low front-garden fencing to mark a boundary without blocking the view.

Gates

Side gates, front gates and gates matched to new fencing, hung on solid posts.

Built for Edinburgh weather

Concrete or heavy timber posts

Concrete posts don't rot and suit panel fences in exposed spots. Timber posts are pressure-treated and set in concrete.

Depth

Posts are set deep enough for the height of the fence, with more depth in exposed gardens.

Gravel boards

Concrete or treated gravel boards along the bottom keep panels and boards off the wet ground, where most rot starts.

Shedding water

Post caps and capping rails stop water soaking into the end grain.

Wind-aware choices

On exposed plots on the edge of the city or towards the coast, we'll steer you towards closeboard or slatted fencing rather than solid panels.

Heights, boundaries and permission

In Scotland a garden fence up to 2 metres high usually doesn't need planning permission.

Any part over 1 metre that sits in front of the house where it faces a road does, and conservation areas and listed buildings have stricter rules. Some newer estates also have title conditions about front-garden fences, so it's worth checking your deeds.

If the fence is on a boundary you share with a neighbour, your title deeds may say who owns and maintains it. Agreeing the line and style with your neighbour before work starts saves arguments later.

Fencing FAQs

Concrete or timber posts?

Concrete posts with concrete gravel boards are the longest-lasting option for panel fences. Timber posts suit closeboard fencing and look more natural. Both work if they're set properly.

Do you remove the old fence?

Yes. We take down and remove the old fence, posts and concrete as part of the job.

How long does a new fence take?

A typical back-garden run of fencing takes one to two days. Longer runs, slopes and gates take longer.

Which side of the fence faces my neighbour?

Convention is that the good side faces outwards, but on a shared boundary it's best agreed with your neighbour first.
