What East Lothian gardens need

On the coast, fencing needs to be wind-permeable and fixed with rust-resistant fittings, and paving needs to cope with salt and damp. In Haddington, North Berwick, Dirleton, Gullane and Inveresk, conservation areas mean care with walls, frontages and materials. On the new estates around Musselburgh, Tranent and Dunbar, it's about digging out compacted ground and building patios, drives and fences that last longer than the builder's.
