Driveways in Musselburgh

Monoblock and paved driveways for Musselburgh's older streets and newer estates, with drainage that keeps water off the road.

We build driveways in Musselburgh, Wallyford and Whitecraig – monoblock and paved drives dug out, built on a compacted sub-base and finished with proper drainage.

Parking in Musselburgh varies a lot from street to street. In the older parts of town many houses have no off-street parking at all, while newer homes in Wallyford and Craighall came with a single drive that's now too small. Both lead to the same question: can we fit a car, or another car, in the front garden?

Driveways in Musselburgh: how we work

Creating a new driveway in an older street

Turning a front garden into a driveway means taking out the lawn or old paving, possibly removing part of a front wall, building a full-depth sub-base and laying a surface that can take a car. You'll also need a dropped kerb approved by East Lothian Council before cars can cross the pavement. We'll talk you through what's involved before you commit.

Extending new-build driveways

In Wallyford, Craighall and Whitecraig the usual job is widening a single drive into a double. We build the extension to the same depth as the original and blend or relay the surface so it looks like one drive.

Relaying and replacing

Older monoblock drives that have sunk or spread are lifted, the base rebuilt and the blocks relaid or replaced.

02

Drainage matters here

Musselburgh is a riverside and coastal town, and surface water is taken seriously. In Scotland, new hard surfaces in front gardens generally need to be permeable or drain into the garden rather than the road to avoid needing planning permission. We build that in from the start, either with permeable block paving, a gravel edge or soakaway, or falls into a planted border. It keeps you within the rules and helps the garden cope with heavy rain.

03

Conservation areas and frontages

Parts of Musselburgh, including Inveresk and the historic town centre, are conservation areas. Removing a front wall or railings to create a driveway there is likely to need permission, and the council may have views on materials. If your house is in one of these areas, we'll suggest checking with East Lothian Council planning before going ahead.

Choosing materials

Charcoal or brindle monoblock in herringbone suits most Musselburgh homes. For older stone houses, a darker, tumbled block or setts can look more in keeping than bright new paving. See monoblock driveways for patterns and finishes.

Musselburgh driveway FAQs

Can I turn my front garden into a driveway?

Often, yes, if there's enough depth for a car and the council approves a dropped kerb. In a conservation area, removing a front wall may also need permission.

How do I stop my driveway flooding?

By building it with the right falls and somewhere for the water to go: a channel drain, soakaway, gravel edge or permeable paving.

How long does a new driveway take?

Usually one to two weeks, depending on size and how much needs to be removed first.
