We build driveways in Penicuik, Roslin and Auchendinny – monoblock and paved drives dug out, built on a compacted sub-base and finished with proper drainage.
A lot of Penicuik homes are built on slopes, and that makes driveways more demanding than on flat ground. Water runs down them towards the house or garage, blocks can creep downhill if the edging isn't solid, and a steep drive in frost or snow is no joke. We design for all three.
01
Driveways in Penicuik: how we work
A deep, well-compacted base
Sloping drives and heavy ground both put more stress on the sub-base. We dig out to firm ground, use a geotextile membrane on soft clay, and compact the stone sub-base in layers. On a slope, a well-built base is what stops ruts forming where wheels brake and turn.
Strong edges on a slope
Monoblock is held in place by its edging. On a slope, gravity is always pulling blocks downhill, so we set edging kerbs on a concrete bed and back them with concrete, and add an intermediate restraint across very long or steep drives.
Water management
On a drive that falls towards the house or garage, we fit a channel drain across the bottom, connected to a soakaway or suitable drain. On a drive that falls towards the road, we still need to keep water in the garden to meet front-garden rules, which usually means a channel drain at the top of the pavement draining to a soakaway, or permeable paving.
Grip in frost and snow
Herringbone monoblock interlocks best and gives the most grip under braking. Tumbled or textured blocks help further, and we avoid smooth, polished finishes on steep drives.
02
Planning and dropped kerbs
New hard surfaces in front gardens need to be permeable or drain within the garden to avoid needing planning permission. A new or wider entrance needs a dropped kerb approved by Midlothian Council. In the town centre conservation area and in Roslin, removing a front wall may need permission.

Textured or tumbled blocks for grip.
Steps
Pedestrian steps alongside a steep drive.

Penicuik driveway FAQs
How steep can a monoblock drive be?
Monoblock copes well with moderate slopes when it's laid in herringbone with strong edging. On very steep drives we'll talk through the options at the visit, including steps for pedestrians alongside.
Will salt damage monoblock?
Occasional de-icing salt is fine on concrete blocks. Brushing off excess when the frost has passed helps keep the surface in good condition.
How long does a driveway take?
Usually one to two weeks, depending on size, slope and the weather.
