We fit garden gates in Edinburgh – side gates, front gates and gates matched to new fencing – hung on solid posts so they open and close properly.
A gate gets more use and more strain than any other part of a fence. It's opened every day, slammed by the wind and leant on. Most gate problems, such as dropping, sticking or not latching, come down to the posts and the hinges rather than the gate itself.
01
Garden gates in Edinburgh made to fit
Side gates
Tall, solid gates between the house and the boundary, for privacy and security. Usually ledged and braced or framed timber, with a lock or bolt on the inside.
Front garden gates
Lower gates in front walls or fences, often with piers either side. Styles range from traditional picket to solid timber to match the fence.
Back gates
Gates onto lanes, paths or parking at the bottom of the garden.
Double gates
Pairs of gates for wider openings, such as driveway or garden access for a trailer or mower.
Gates in walls
Gates hung on brick or stone piers, with hinges fixed into the masonry. As bricklayers, we can build the piers too. See garden walls.
02
Why gates drop and how we stop it
Posts not strong enough
Gate posts carry the whole weight of the gate on one side. We use heavier posts than the fence and set them deeper in concrete.
No bracing
A timber gate needs a diagonal brace running up from the hinge side, or it will sag.
Weak hinges
We fit heavy-duty hinges sized for the gate.
Ground movement
Posts set in soil move; posts set in concrete don't.
03
Choosing a gate
| Style | Suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ledged and braced | Side gates, cottage gardens | Simple, strong, traditional |
| Framed closeboard | Side gates matching closeboard fences | Very strong; privacy |
| Slatted | Contemporary gardens | Matches slatted fencing |
| Picket | Front gardens | Low and open |

04
Security
Side gates are the most common way into a back garden, so for security we fit gates full-height with no gaps underneath, a lockable bolt or lock on the inside, and hinges that can't be lifted off from outside.
05
Gates across Edinburgh and the Lothians
We hang gates across the city and the Lothians, usually as part of new fencing jobs, including in Livingston, Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg, Penicuik and Musselburgh.
Garden gate FAQs
My gate has dropped. Can it be fixed?
Often. Resetting the post, adding a brace or fitting stronger hinges can sort it. If the post or gate has rotted, it's better replaced.
Can you make a gate to fit an odd-sized opening?
Yes. Gates can be built or cut to fit openings that don't match standard sizes.
Do I need permission for a gate?
The same height limits as fences and walls apply: up to 2 metres generally, and 1 metre at the front where it faces a road.
