We build and repair garden walls in Dalkeith and Eskbank and Danderhall – boundary walls, retaining walls and wall rebuilds on proper foundations.
Eskbank and the older parts of Dalkeith have some of the finest garden walls in Midlothian: long stone and brick boundary walls, gate piers with caps, and low front walls that once carried railings. Many are a century old or more. Mature trees, tired pointing and copings that have let water in for decades mean a lot of them now need attention.

Garden walls in Dalkeith: how we work
Old boundary walls and gate piers
We start by working out why a wall is failing. Tree roots lifting the footing are common in Eskbank's mature gardens. So are copings that have cracked or fallen, letting water soak into the wall and frost break up the joints. Gate piers lean when the hinges of heavy gates pull on them for years. The repair could be new copings and repointing, rebuilding a section or rebuilding a pier on a new footing. We reuse the original bricks and copings wherever they're sound. See garden wall repairs.
Matching old work
Older walls were often built with softer mortar than today's. Repairing them with a hard cement mortar can trap moisture and damage the brick or stone, so we match mortar to the wall.
New walls
For homes in Newton, Danderhall and Shawfair, new walls are usually front walls, dwarf walls along a driveway, raised beds or a low wall around a patio. All are built on concrete footings below frost depth with a coping on top.

Conservation areas and walls
Much of Eskbank and central Dalkeith is in a conservation area. Like-for-like repairs are usually fine, but taking down, lowering or making openings in a boundary wall may need permission from Midlothian Council. If you want to widen an entrance for a driveway, check first.
03
Walls and trees
Where a wall runs beside a mature tree, rebuilding it on a deep, solid footing can sever important roots. Sometimes it's better to bridge the foundation over roots or realign the wall slightly. If the tree is protected or in a conservation area, you'll need council consent before any work affects it.

Dalkeith garden wall FAQs
My gate pier is leaning. Can it be fixed?
Usually it needs taking down and rebuilding on a proper footing. We can reuse the original cap and bricks.
Do I need permission to repair a wall in Eskbank?
Like-for-like repairs usually don't. Demolition, lowering or new openings in a conservation area may.
Can you build a wall to match my house?
Yes. We'll bring brick samples and match bond, joint colour and coping style as closely as possible.
