Patios in Penicuik

Level, well-drained patios for sloping gardens, laid in materials that stand up to Penicuik's frosts.

We design and lay patios in Penicuik and nearby Roslin and Auchendinny – porcelain, natural stone and paving on a properly prepared base, finished on time and for the price we quoted.

Two things decide most patio jobs in Penicuik: the slope and the weather. Many gardens fall away from or rise up behind the house, so creating a level space takes some building. And with colder, wetter winters than the city, a patio here has to deal with more frost and more water than one in Edinburgh.

Patios in Penicuik: how we work

Finding the level

On a garden that rises behind the house, we cut into the slope and build a retaining wall to hold back the bank, with drainage behind it, so the patio sits at house level. On a garden that falls away, we build up the patio on a solid sub-base behind a low wall, with steps down to the lawn. Either way, the patio is set to fall gently away from the house.

Drainage for hill rain

Rain off the Pentlands and heavy ground mean water needs a clear route away. Depending on the garden, we add a channel drain at the foot of a retaining wall, a soakaway, or a gravel strip along the patio edge. A patio with nowhere for water to go stays green and slippery.

Materials that handle frost

Water that soaks into paving and freezes is what makes slabs flake and joints crumble. Porcelain absorbs almost no water, which is why it's our first suggestion for Penicuik. Good-quality sandstone works too, laid on a full bed and sealed. We avoid cheap, porous concrete slabs, and we never lay on mortar dabs, which leave hollows for water to collect and freeze.

Laying in the right weather

Mortar and jointing need time above freezing to cure. We watch the forecast closely in Penicuik and won't lay paving with hard frost coming.

What affects the cost of a patio in Penicuik

The slope

Cutting in or building up, plus the retaining wall and steps, is often the largest part of the cost.

Drainage

Channel drains at the foot of walls and soakaways for hill rain.

Material

Frost-proof porcelain or good sandstone; we don't recommend cheap porous slabs here.

Size

Larger terraces need more sub-base and more walling.

Access

Steep gardens make moving materials and spoil slower.

Weather

Winter jobs may take longer if frost stops work.

Penicuik patio FAQs

Will porcelain be slippery in winter?

Choose an outdoor porcelain with a textured, anti-slip finish and keep it clear of moss. It's often less slippery than old concrete slabs, which hold water.

Do I need a retaining wall for my patio?

If you're cutting into a slope by more than a step or two, yes. We'll explain what's needed at the visit.

How long will a patio on a slope take?

Longer than on a flat garden. A patio with a retaining wall and steps typically takes one to two weeks.
