We build and repair garden walls in Penicuik and Roslin and Auchendinny – boundary walls, retaining walls and wall rebuilds on proper foundations.
Garden walls in Penicuik work harder than most. On sloping plots they hold back tonnes of soil and water, and on every plot they face colder winters, more rain and more freeze-thaw cycles than walls in the city. A wall built without enough foundation, drainage or frost-resistant materials shows it quickly here.

Garden walls in Penicuik: how we work
Retaining walls for sloping gardens
Retaining walls are the wall we build most often in Penicuik. They turn a sloping garden into level terraces for a patio, lawn or planting. A retaining wall needs a wider, deeper footing than a free-standing wall, a thicker or reinforced build, and drainage behind it so water can't build up pressure: free-draining backfill, a perforated pipe at the base and weep holes through the wall. Taller walls may need a structural engineer's design. See retaining walls.
Frost-resistant materials
Bricks vary in how well they cope with frost. In exposed gardens we use bricks rated for severe exposure, and we finish every wall with a coping that throws water clear of the face. A wall that soaks up water from the top is a wall that will crack and spall in a Penicuik winter.
Footings below frost depth
We dig footings down to firm ground, below the depth frost reaches, so the wall doesn't heave as the ground freezes and thaws.

Old stone walls in Penicuik and Roslin
The older parts of Penicuik and the village of Roslin have stone boundary walls, many of them very old. Common problems are failed pointing, missing copings and sections pushed over by roots or ground movement. We repair them using original materials where we can, with mortar suited to the wall. In the conservation areas, like-for-like repairs are usually fine, but demolishing or altering a wall may need permission. See garden wall repairs.

Penicuik garden wall FAQs
One tall wall or several low ones?
On a steep garden, two or three lower terraces are often better: simpler to build, easier to drain and more useful as a garden.
Why is my retaining wall leaning?
Usually because there's no drainage behind it and water pressure has built up, or the footing was too small. It normally needs rebuilding with drainage.
How long does a retaining wall take?
It depends on length and height. Allow one to two weeks for a typical terrace including the patio or lawn above.
