Garden Walls in Bonnyrigg

Retaining walls that turn Lasswade's slopes into usable garden, plus front walls and raised beds across Bonnyrigg.

We build and repair garden walls in Bonnyrigg and Lasswade and Poltonhall – boundary walls, retaining walls and wall rebuilds on proper foundations.

Garden walls around Bonnyrigg often have a structural job to do. Lasswade sits in the North Esk valley, and many gardens there slope steeply, so retaining walls are what make them usable. In Broomieknowe and the older parts of Bonnyrigg, there are period boundary walls to repair. And on newer estates, walls give bare plots structure.

Garden walls in Bonnyrigg: how we work

Retaining walls in Lasswade

A retaining wall holds back the weight of soil and the water in it, which is far more than a free-standing wall carries. We dig a wider, deeper footing, build the wall thicker at the base or in reinforced block, and put drainage behind it: free-draining stone backfill, a perforated drain at the bottom and weep holes so water can't build up pressure. Taller walls may need an engineer's design. See retaining walls.

Terracing

On steep gardens, two or three lower walls are often better than one tall one. They're easier to build, need less engineering and create several level spaces for a patio, lawn and planting, linked by steps.

Older walls in Broomieknowe and central Bonnyrigg

Period walls with failing pointing, loose copings or leaning sections are repaired using the original materials where possible and mortar matched to the wall. See garden wall repairs.

New walls for newer homes

Front walls, dwarf walls along driveways, raised beds and walls around patios, built on proper footings with a coping on top.

02

Planning and boundaries

Walls up to 2 metres usually don't need planning permission, but anything over 1 metre in front of the house facing a road does. Lasswade has a conservation area where changes to boundary walls are more tightly controlled. If a retaining wall sits on a boundary, the neighbour's garden is affected too, so agree the plan with them before work starts.

Bonnyrigg garden wall FAQs

My retaining wall is bulging. Is it dangerous?

A bulging retaining wall can fail suddenly, especially after heavy rain. Keep clear of it and get it assessed. It usually needs rebuilding with proper drainage behind.

Can you build steps into a retaining wall?

Yes. Steps are often built into terraced gardens to link the levels.

Can I use sleepers instead of brick?

For low walls, timber sleepers are an option, though they don't last as long as masonry.
