The northern Borders are within easy reach of our base in Loanhead, especially since the Borders Railway and improved roads brought Galashiels and Peebles closer to Edinburgh. More people are moving to the Tweed valley, and with them come renovations of older stone homes and finishing work on new ones.

What Borders gardens need

Borders towns are built in stone, and their gardens are often on steep valley sides. That means a lot of retaining walls and terracing, careful repairs to old boundary walls, and drainage that copes with rain running off the hills. Winters in the valleys are colder than in Edinburgh, so materials and timing matter too. On newer estates in Tweedbank, Cardrona and elsewhere, it's the familiar job of turning a bare plot into a garden.
